An Integrated Approach to Efficiently Providing Fault Tolerance for Mobile Multicast
نویسنده
چکیده
The paper presents an efficient approach to providing fault-tolerant capability for mobile multicast. In multicast communication, packets can be concurrently sent from a source node to all members by a multicast tree. If failures occur in nodes (links) of the multicast tree, the faulty tree will be partitioned into several disconnected subtrees. For the subtrees without the source node, it cannot deliver multicast packets to the members under its delivery range again. The main goal of this paper is to make members immune from failure affection. The proposed fault-tolerant approach contains two schemes. The first scheme uses the redundant resources of a mobile network to reconnect all the disconnected subtrees. Compared to previous approaches, the first scheme does not generate loops. In addition, it can control the maximum delivery delay of the new reconnected multicast tree. The second scheme is initiated when the first scheme cannot reconnect all the subtrees. It extracts the failure-free part of the faulty multicast tree to form a safe multicast subtree. Then, multicast packets are only delivered along the safe multicast subtree to all the members. Unlike the first scheme, the second scheme is not based on the network topology support to achieve fault tolerance. Finally, simulations are performed to compare the proposed approach and previous approaches in terms of the fault-tolerant capability and various performance overheads.

Abstract Using mobile agents, it is possible to bring the code close to the resources, which is not foreseen by the traditional client/server paradigm. Compared to the client/server computing paradigm, the greater flexibility of the mobile agent paradigm comes at additional costs as well as the additional complexity of developing and managing mobile agent-based applications. Such complexity ...
متن کاملSupporting Rapid Mobility via Locality in an Overlay Network
In this paper, we present Mobile Tapestry, an extension to the Tapestry overlay network protocol, that enables scalable, fault-tolerant, and timely delivery of network messages, including multimedia streams, to and from rapidly moving nodes. Mobile Tapestry efficiently supports individual mobile nodes and, by using an approach we call hierarchical mobility, it also supports large groups of mobi...
متن کاملA Fault-Tolerant Multicast Routing Protocol for Mobile Ad–Hoc Networks
In this work, we propose an efficient multicast routing protocol for mobile ad hoc networks. To achieve high efficiency with low channel and storage overhead, the proposed protocol employs the following mechanism: 1 on-demand invocation of route setup and route maintenance process to avoid periodical control packet transmissions, thus reducing channel overhead, 2 creation of “forwarding group” ...
متن کاملAn Enhanced MSS-based checkpointing Scheme for Mobile Computing Environment
Mobile computing systems are made up of different components among which Mobile Support Stations (MSSs) play a key role. This paper proposes an efficient MSS-based non-blocking coordinated checkpointing scheme for mobile computing environment. In the scheme suggested nearly all aspects of checkpointing and their related overheads are forwarded to the MSSs and as a result the workload of Mobile ...
متن کاملFault-Tolerant Support for Reliable Multicast in Mobile Wireless Systems
In this paper we present a protocol for reliable multicast within a group of mobile hosts that communicate with a wired infrastructure by means of wireless technology. The protocol tolerates failures in the wired infrastructure, i.e., crashes of stationary hosts and partitions of wired links. The wireless coverage may be incomplete and message losses could occur even within cells, due to physic...
